George Towle Maine, USA Obituary – Death: MTC Member, Thanksgiving 4 Miler Race Director and USM Coach Dies

We pause in our celebrations of the Boston runners to honor and remember George Towle, who passed away last night, leaving a deep void in the running community and in the hearts of all who knew him.

George was a longtime and dedicated member of the MTC, where his presence became a constant source of encouragement and camaraderie. He was widely respected not only as a runner but as a leader and organizer. As the race director of the Thanksgiving 4 Miler—an event recognized by the Maine Running Hall of Fame—George played a pivotal role in creating a race that brought together athletes, families, and friends year after year. His commitment ensured that the event was more than just a race; it was a cherished tradition.

Beyond his contributions as a race director, George served as a coach at USM, where he mentored countless athletes. His approach was rooted in honesty, discipline, and genuine care for each individual. He had a unique ability to push people to achieve their best while making them feel supported every step of the way. Many of his athletes credit him not only for their athletic growth but also for the life lessons he imparted.

George was known for his kindness and straightforward nature. He spoke plainly, acted sincerely, and built lasting relationships grounded in trust and respect. Whether it was offering advice, sharing a laugh, or simply showing up, he had a way of making people feel valued. His willingness to meet at GLB and connect with fellow runners and friends was just one of the many ways he nurtured the strong sense of community around him.

Though he often shied away from the spotlight and avoided photographs, those who knew him understood that his impact didn’t need documentation—it was felt in every race organized, every athlete coached, and every friendship formed. We are fortunate to have captured at least one photo from November 2025, a small but meaningful reminder of a man who gave so much of himself to others.

George’s passing is a profound loss, but his legacy will continue to live on through the traditions he helped build and the lives he touched. His spirit will remain present on race courses, in training sessions, and in the stories shared by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and running partners during this difficult time. As we await details of memorial services, we invite everyone who knew George to share photos, memories, and stories in his honor. In doing so, we can celebrate a life that meant so much to so many.

George Towle will be remembered always—with gratitude, respect, and enduring admiration.
